As we inch closer and closer to storm season, I thought it appropriate to post some information on how to prepare for and recover from serious storms. As I post this (3/2/2012 @10:00AM), our area is again under the threat of severe weather. The following is taken from an article posted on the Trusted Choice website.
  • Before a storm hits, it is critical that you become familiar with the type of alarm and notification system that your local community uses. These systems can give you enough warning to seek the proper shelter for the type of storm heading your way.
  • The best preparation for severe weather is to be alert to changing weather patterns. Pay attention to reports and rely on your own instincts and experience.
  • Nature provides environmental clues that may precede a tornado. Look for a dark greenish sky, a wall of clouds, and hail. Listen for a loud roar, similar to that of an approaching train.
  • The safest place to be during severe weather is underground. If you can't get to a basement, find a small interior room away from exterior windows.
  • Duck under a steady piece of furniture such as a table or desk. Hold onto it and use your arms to protect your head and neck.
  • If you live in a mobile home, you should leave as soon as possible and seek shelter elsewhere.
  • If there is no safe place inside, go outside and lie flat on the ground with your hands over your head and neck.
  • If you are in a car, get our and seek shelter or lie down in a low area, again with your hands over your head and neck.
  • If you are in a high rise building, make your way to an interior room on the lowest floor away from exterior windows.
  • After the storm has passed, check for any injured or trapped people. Do not move them unless they are in immediate danger of further injury.
If you experience damage, please take the following steps:
  • Notify the appropriate authorites and get treatment for any injuries.
  • Protect yourself and your property from further injury or damage.
  • Contact us to start processing your claim.
  • Take photographs and document any damage that you can do so safely.
